In 2010 Service Civil International has celebrated it’s 90th anniversary. For this occassion many SCI’s branches have commemorated about the history of this world-wide network, promoting peace and cooperation between nations. In Hungary to local branch, Útilapu Hálózat has organised the exhibtion and many programs to promote the mission and history of SCI and volunteering on international and national level. Because in Hungary the exhibition was orgaised in 2011, the series of programs also connected well to the objectives of the European Year of Volunteering: to the promotion of volunteering amongst people of different ages and backgrounds.

On the exhibition (organised in the heart of Budapest, in an alternative cultural center called Tűzraktér) visitors could get to know the history of SCI and it’s mission of promoting human rights, non-violence, international cooperation, tolerance and sustainability. Special emphasize was made on remembering the life and work of SCI’s founder, Pierre Ceresole. Many programs – including presentations, games and quiz – were orgaised about the impressive work of the Swiss engineer who dedicated his life to peace, activism and the promotion of international civil service. Besides many photos were exhibited about volunteering „then and now”, about the workcamps and activities of Útilapu Hálózat.

In the exhibition area many programs were organised by volunteers of Útilapu. On the opening night, which was organised on the 17th February visitors could get basic information on the history of SCI, the life of Pierre Ceresole and the opportunities withing Útilapu. The good atmosphere was guaranteed by a music band playing French gypsy jazz. During the weekend (on the 19th and 20th February) different sessions and workshops were organised about volunteering, workcamps, non-formal learning, Youth in Action and visitors could get more detailed information about SCI and Pierre Ceresole. But it wasn’t the end yet… The 26th, Saturday was dedicated to green topics: to fair trade and sustainability. The programs were made more colourful by recycling handycraft sessions, movie night, bio bufet and the presentations of our volunteers. We have closed the exhibition by organising a great intercultural party on the 3rd of March.
